W Lawrence Daniels
PhD, RN, CPNP, PMHS, NRP

W Lawrence (Larry) Daniels began his nursing career in 1992 after retiring as an insurance agent and investment representative. At the age of 16, he began a volunteer career with the rescue squad system in Virginia that has continued to today. He has been a paramedic, EMT instructor, child passenger safety technician instructor, and firefighter during that career. A life-changing mission to Liberia with Operation Smile in 1989 to teach first aid and CPR caused him to change careers and enter nursing, from which he has not looked back. Since then, he has also taught first aid in China and helped develop the emergency medical technician program of the Philippine Red Cross.

In 1995, Larry completed a master’s degree in nursing as a pediatric nurse practitioner in a combined program with Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University. He received his bachelor’s degree in nursing from Norfolk State University and a doctor of philosophy in nursing from Hampton University. He also has a bachelor of science degree in interdisciplinary studies on emergency medical services administration from Old Dominion University and a master’s in adult education from Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University. Johns Hopkins University awarded him a certificate in injury prevention.

Larry started his nursing career in area emergency departments as a staff nurse and maintained part-time staff positions in EDs for 17 years. In 1996, he was the pediatric provider for Suffolk Community Health Center. Over the years, he has been a primary care pediatric provider in health departments, university clinics, and ran the South Norfolk Pediatric Center. He has been on university faculties for over 40 years and served as an associate professor and nursing chair for Hampton University and South University. At Hampton, he was a lead faculty member and curriculum manager for the pediatric nurse practitioner program. He has served as clinical and online faculty for multiple universities.

Since 2013, he has specialized in pediatric mental health and in addition to board certification as a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Primary Care, he is board certified as a Pediatric Mental Health Specialist. He has extensive experience with autism, anxiety, ADD and ADHD, and depression in the pediatric population.

He strives to follow the wisdom of Theodore Roosevelt who is reported to have said “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”.
